Sparty in Capital One Mascot Challenge for first time

It always seems strange watching the commercials for the Capital One Bowl Mascot Challenge and not seeing Sparty in there.

Sparty is one of the most recognizable mascots in college athletics. But he was never in the commercials. I was once told by a former Sparty this was because of the MSU sponsorships with banks — currently PNC.

Well, that's going to change. MLive reports Sparty is in the contest for the first time ever.

Voting opened at noon today and continues through Nov. 21. The mascots compete head-to-head for 12 weeks.

You can vote at CapitalOneBowl.com, Facebook.com/MascotChallenge and via text, by sending a message of "VOTE" to 78527 and replying to a confirmation message with the word "SPARTY."

The competition provides money to each school's mascot program.

Sparty's first opponent is Buzz from Georgia Tech. At the time of this post, Sparty leads, 164-71.

A lot of you may think Sparty already is the best mascot. Well, now it's time for democracy to, again, decide.
